Burgos
A jewel on the Way of Saint James
Burgos, capital of the province of the same name, is a modern city situated in the heart of Castilla y León with a strong commitment to our cultural heritage, as evidenced by the Museum of Human Evolution, where all the fossils and other finds from the spectacular Sierra de Atapuerca site are studied and exhibited. Remains from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze and Iron ages have been found there. As one of the world's major archaeological sites, it has made valuable contributions to our knowledge of man's origins and evolution.
The city is located at a point where various important routes meet, including the route from Oporto in Portugal to Irún, connecting the north of Spain with centre of the peninsula, and the Way of Saint James, included in Unesco's World Heritage of Humanity list. Burgos is a compulsory stop for the thousands of European pilgrims making their way to Santiago each year.
Burgos and World Heritage of Humanity
Burgos has two World Heritage features recognised by Unesco. The first is the Way of Saint James to Santiago, while the second is the city's spectacular cathedral, which houses the Chapel of the Constables (Capilla de los Condestables). Built in the thirteenth century, it is one of the main attractions in a city full of history but whose life is in tune with modern times, making it attractive to travellers from all over the world.
